Marbled Murrelet Observer Training

The Marbled Murrelet Observer Training Program helps trainees to develop their ability to see and hear Marbled Murrelets in the forest and to accurately record observations on a data form. The evaluation process provides a standardized method for determining if an individual's abilities will yield reliable and dependable survey data.

This training program was developed by Mad River Biologists under the guidance of the Pacific Seabird Group's Marbled Murrelet Inland Survey Protocol.

Training for first and second year murrelet surveyors involves a 4-day course which includes a seminar on murrelet biology and forest survey protocol; field training, with a minimum of three survey mornings from a qualified instructor; and a field exam with a qualified evaluator. Once a trainee passes the field exam, they are qualified to conduct murrelet forest surveys.

For surveyors with at least two years of survey experience that includes murrelet experience with 50 or more detections and 5 or more surveys during the previous year, a 2-day refresher course is available, during which trainees are refamiliarized with survey techniques, murrelet identification, updated on any changes to the survey protocol, and re-evaluated for continued certification. However, we strongly recommend the full 4-day course to surveyors with all levels of experience, as the additional time in the field, with instruction, inevitably results in higher rates of success during evaluations. Furthermore, all 4-day course participants are entitled to a re-test, if needed, at no extra charge. Participants of the refresher course who require a re-test will be charged an additional fee.
