In 1996, When a population of Snowy Plovers was discovered nesting along the gravel bars of the lower Eel River in Humboldt County, Mad River Biologists coordinated and performed the major portion of the initial survey work. MRB also designed and implemented a project assessing habitat use of the plovers in this unusual habitat. MRB’s expertise was sought by a variety of agencies, including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the California Department of Fish and Game, the California Department of Parks and Recreation, the Bureau of Land Management, and others, when we were asked to implement a training program to satisfy the needs of agency staff for complying with the requirements of the Endangered Species Act.

Beginning in 2000, Mad River Biologists and Humboldt State University launched a collaborative effort, conducting monitoring and research on a color-marked population in coastal northern California (Recovery Unit 2). Dr. Mark Colwell and his students, in collaboration primarily with Sean McAllister and Ron LeValley of MRB, have made significant contributions to the recovery effort.
